Action Abstraction is a year-long display of six bronze sculptures by Bill Barrett, an internationally known artist widely considered one of today’s most celebrated sculptors. The sculptures, strategically placed across campus, offer our university partners an introduction to public art as well as new opportunities to integrate the artist and his work into classes relating to sculpture, public art, and design.
Barrett’s work exudes movement and energy, along with a calligraphic sensibility. His bronze sculptures address the relationship between positive and negative space with grace, elegance, and balance. Through a delicate balance of form and content, the constructions transcend the stark aesthetics of minimalism with warmth and humanity.
Barrett’s work can be seen in public and private collections around the world including the 911 Memorial & Museum in New York City, Rice University in Houston, TX, the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, OH, and numerous others.
This exhibition is made possible in part by the loan of the artworks by Bill and Debora Barrett and LewAllen Galleries, Santa Fe, NM; and through generous support by James Pickel, Jim Vallion; OSU Student Union; OSU Museum of Art Advocates, OSU Museum of Art Founding Patrons and Charter Members; and the OSU/A&M Board of Regents.
